Barbara Berryman
Barb says her photo, taken at Queens Quay shortly before the Raptors won the NBA finals, represents the multicultural city. "We had the Raptors game and everybody came together in a moment, and race never even played a part. It was so nice to see conversations on the bus or the street, and the day before, you wouldn’t even say good morning to these people."
As someone who has experienced racism and homelessness, Barb spoke about the importance of community and not giving up. "Homelessness doesn’t have a colour. Homelessness comes in all shapes and sizes. Try not to give up, as much as the doors keep closing or not opening. I had my own give up moments, but I’m a survivor. And sometimes people are placed at the right time in our life to guide us or give us direction or support. Don’t give up."
