"This is where I sleep sometimes – my home away from home when it rains" is how Rule describes his photo, taken near Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue West. "This is a shelter where I can find peace. I do feel safe, but you never know who will turn up. Five of us shared it, and sometimes we leave food for a fox."
An arborist with the City of Toronto for more than 31 years, Rule wanted to photograph his neighborhood. "MYTORONTO means everything in the eyes of a person living on the streets. I wanted to take pictures of where I live. I wanted people to think 'What an ugly looking tent' and I wanted them to think about how rough it is living out here."
"I hope no one has to go through it, especially at a late stage in life. They don’t need the harshness," Rule, who is 66, says. "One day I would like to tell my story. This picture is the first step."
