Shayan, a mother of three living in Etobicoke, sees beauty in her children’s strength. “This is my newborn son - Here, he is holding onto his Dad’s hand. He is a part of us, life we brought into this world. He is my everything. Newborns are so precious, they don’t know anything yet, and are dependent on those around them. This is only his second day in the world, yet he is about to have surgery. He is a strong though and this is just the beginning for him.”

This photo, taken in Graffiti Alley in Downtown Toronto, features a 26-year-old gentleman with schizophrenia. “He had called for help and he’s not around anymore. Black lives need to stop being systematically oppressed and targeted. Equality and equity must be the goal. Without question, we must eradicate systematic white supremacy and anti-black racism.”

“Peaceful and calming” is how Lucie describes this photograph that was taken at Allen Gardens Park. “It was late at night and the reflection of the light on the pathway is what first caught my eye. There was a mysteriousness to the way in which the trees and light posts lined the pathway, which instantly drew me in. I noticed a person sleeping on the bench. While this person may have just been passing by, I hope it reminds others that changes can happen very quickly and that anybody can be touched by poverty.”

“My fiancé and I were walking to the Albion Mall in Etobicoke when we saw this raccoon,” exclaims Shayan. “At first glance, the raccoon looked to be chilling, but it was a really hot day, and we quickly realized he was exhausted. My fiancé brought the raccoon water, and as soon as he drank it, he was out of there. This experience showed me that animals feel the same things we do. We have no idea how long that raccoon was out there in need of water, but animals need water and basic essentials just like us.”

“I have always been interested in underground spaces. I like to travel using the subway. I wanted to show an evolution of the subway,” says Bob, about his winning photo. “I think this photo represents beauty to me as it takes account of the fact that many people who are experiencing homelessness need to use public transit to get around the city. The fact that we can have safe, affordable and accessible transportation available is amazing.”

“I was walking near Sugar Beach and I saw a woman drumming in the scorching heat. When she took a break, I spoke about the project and she was happy to be photographed. I wanted to capture the importance of the movement, and the art of the drumming instead of the person drumming. I loved the colours of the drum. The person was adding a rhythm to the day.”

Murray says he was inspired by the MYTORONTO Winter contest participants, and seeing their experience with the program itself.

“In the past I would ask people to stop so that I can take a picture, these days I am more conscious that people are on edge.” This photo, Bob says, represents the beauty that is found below the ground. In the future, he hopes that people will spend more time outdoors, finding the places where his photos are taken.

Buster and Stella, pictured above, are siblings, "they’re my friend’s dogs and we hang out quite a bit." Rowena, the photographer, says, “I was holding the camera and Lester (front) tilts his head when he's curious, and then Stella (back), the one in the back, was like, 'why are you talking to him, why aren’t you talking to me?' It’s always about Stella.” She says animals are very intuitive, "Looking at their faces, it’s like sometimes they know what you are thinking.”
